FCG Plugin Alternative

Since I can remember, my customers (specifically customers of the WordPress Newsletters plugin) complained about conflicts with the WordPress Featured Content Gallery plugin aka FCG. I decided to code a Featured Content Gallery plugin alternative which is more flexible and configurable and which, at the same time doesn’t conflict with other 3rd party WordPress plugins or theme modules. Let me tell you how this happened…

The main reason for the conflict – and I’m not good and giving blame but in this case I have all reason to do so – was that the FCG plugin did not follow WordPress conventions and it also used the MooTools JavaScript framework which doesn’t work well with jQuery on its side. I am always willing to work together with other plugin/theme developers as I’ve done many times in the past but in this case it didn’t seem to have an effect. I tried to contact the FCG developers and also posted on the forums.

Nevertheless, the outcome of this situation is that I spent the last 2 days developing a similar plugin with a JavaScript powered slideshow gallery. It works a bit differently but in my personal opinion it is easier to use and has better configuration settings. The actual slideshow script is just pure JavaScript but the entire WordPress plugin overall is jQuery based. It uses the jQuery libary on both the front- and back-end of your WordPress website once installed. The plugin uses WordPress conventions properly (wp_enqueue_script) which will prevent conflicts with other 3rd party plugins. The plugin is GPL based which means that you can download, use, modify and redistribute it for FREE. See my WordPress Slideshow Gallery plugin in action here (this is a subdomain I set up where you can see a demonstration of the plugin and all updates will be posted here as well since the plugin is GPL based) and/or download it from WordPress.org.

Have fun with the slideshow gallery plugin and please let me know if you have any questions, requests or suggestions!

    @Dagan,

    Yes, you can use images linked to posts through the media uploader. Lets say you uploaded some images to a post with ID 123 through the media uploader, you can display those images in a slideshow on any other post/page like this: [slideshow post_id="123"].

    Please feel free to let us know if you have any other questions: http://tribulant.com/support/

    All the best,
    Antonie

    I am just curious if there is anyway to have the images linked to the posts? The one thing I really liked about FCG is the ability to decide the category list to display and it will link to the post

    It seems like the WP Slideshow Gallery works great for photos but what about content? Can you have the image with in WP Slideshow Gallery link to a post or page?

    Thanks. =) Laura

    Banner Rotator and Featured Content Gallery… is there anyway to get these plugins to work together? I’m stuck and out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much.
